I recently worked with Kim Abeles on the
installation of her major exhibition entitled “Pearls of Wisdom,” a two-year
project that involved working with 800 survivors of domestic violence and the
outstanding organization, A Window between Worlds, one of my favorite
organizations, (awbw.org.) This art exhibit is based on the powerful metaphor
of pearls, essentially grains of sand that are irritants to the oyster that
become things of beauty. Survivors of domestic violence go through extraordinary pain and suffering that over time can be translated into gems or pearls of wisdom. Through art, and the creative process, the participants learn to communicate their pain and therefore begin the healing process. About the Project Kim Abeles’ art crosses disciplines often focusing on the invisible lives embedded within big social issues. She has been described as one of the most acute observers of the state of our region’s body and soul.” Her large-scale installations and art objects explore and map the urban environment and chronicle broad social issues – like domestic violence and abuse. Because she, too, is a survivor, she channels her own “pearls” of wisdom and survival through the project. AWBW is a non-profit organization dedicated to using art to help end domestic violence. Through creative expression, battered women and children recover a sense of renewal and power and are able to move with not against the challenges of their new lives.
